MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Republican candidates have sharp disagreements over a new policy to detain American citizens suspected of terrorism.
President Barack Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act that would allow indefinite detention of such terror suspects. Many civil liberties activists believe the law is unconstitutional.
Front-runner Mitt Romney said he would have signed the law and insisted it was “appropriate” to detain American members of al-Qaida.
“Yes, I would have,” said Romney when asked whether he would have signed the legislation as President Obama did. Members of the crowd — most likely supporters of Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), who believes the bill is unconstitutional — booed him.
“I do believe it is appropriate to have in our nation the capacity to detain people who are threats to this country, who are members of al Qaeda. Look, you have every right in this country to protest and to express your views on a wide range of issues, but you don’t have a right to join a group that has challenged America and has threatened killing Americans, has killed Americans, and has declared war against America. That’s treason. In this country we have a right to take those people and put them in jail.”
The crowd loudly applauded this response.
Romney then said that while he disagreed with Obama on most matters, he would give him the benefit of the doubt not to abuse the powers in the NDAA.
“I recognize that in a setting where they are enemy combatants and some of them on our own soil, that could be abused,” he said. “There are lots of things I think this president does wrong — lots of them — but I don’t think he will abuse this power, and if I were president I would not abuse this power.”
Other members of the crowd again booed Romney.
Rick Santorum said a U.S. citizen who is detained as an enemy combatant should have the right to a lawyer and to appeal their case before a federal court.
Ron Paul said holding American citizens indefinitely is a breach of the U.S. judicial system.
I have been out of commission on several topics but Mary highlighted this topic as a good discussion subject. The following Forbes article provides more details. It oes appear to go too far in some areas in my estimation but I need to read more before discussng it in detail.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2012/01/02/president-obama-signed-the-national-defense-authorization-act-now-what/
The following is from Forbes:
the NDAA authorizes the military to detain even US citizens under the broad new anti-terrorism provisions provided in the bill, once again without trial.
There is some controversy on this point, in part because the law as written is entirely too vague. But whether or not the law will be used to indefinitely detain US citizens domestically, it is written to allow the detention of US citizens abroad as well as foreigners without trial.
“Obama’s signing statement seems to suggest he already believe he has the authority to indefinitely detain Americans—he just never intends to use it,” Adam Serwer writes at Mother Jones. “Left unsaid, perhaps deliberately, is the distinction that has dominated the debate over the defense bill: the difference between detaining an American captured domestically or abroad. This is why ACLU Director Anthony Romero released a statement shortly after Obama’s arguing the authority in the defense bill could “be used by this and future presidents to militarily detain people captured far from any battlefield.”
Forgot to mention that you should read the comments left by readers of the Forbes article.
Good Morning, Villagers…some high clouds on the move, otherwise sunshiny skies, highs in the mid 50′s…hope for rain tomorrow!
Taylor…thanks for this thread, this is an important issue and I’m not very well read on it either. After reading both articles mentioned above, my inclination is to say this “is a bridge too far”…we seem to be applying terrorism judicial tactics to American citizens…no wonder gun sales are going through the roof… a lot of people believe their rights are disappearing before their very eyes…on that, they are right, every facit of our lives is being altered by bigger and bigger government and now you can be detained indefinitely without access to a lawyer…that’s not our system, that’s not right!! Almost anything can be justified in the name of security, but the price we pay may be too high…I think we all should be concerned about this…anytime the government exceeds its limits, our liberty suffers. It’s interesting that this isn’t such a big issue by the media, since it’s a democratic president doing this it’s okay…the media is complicit in this, by not loudly alerting the people to what’s being slipped into these bills…I agree with a lot of those bloggers comments on that!! If we didn’t know this was happening in America, we’d think we were in Syria, Iran, North Korea, or some other dictatorship…what’s the difference, their citizens are detained and then a lot of them just disappear!
Also, leave the military out of this, detaining American citizens shouldn’t fall under the auspices of our military…are we living in a military state or something?
Lots of food for thought…I’ll be interested to hear other opinions…
Enjoy your day…
I too am not ready to commit on a position.
I remember how irritated I was when Bush was given the authority to listen in on phone conversations of American citizens. And the reason given there that in some cases there was not enough time to get the required judicial permissions. I felt that, no matter how justified, that this was the beginning of infringements on more of our rights. My brother and I had a heated argument on this. I felt at the time that there could be put in place, instead, a way to hold the judicial permission on notification, while proceeding with the listening, and that when time allowed the justification could be attained, without the need for global permission to do this.
This NDAA smells of the same thing. I am not one to deny that we have terrorists in our midst that are American citizens. We have enough proof of that. And I agree with Romney that this is treason, punishable by death. So, in my opinion, we already have the laws in place to tweak them for bringing these people to justice. Now, Santorium’s and Newt’s allegation that they should be just brought up before the court is also misleading, to me. We would get into these international trials notoriety, with all the loony bins coming out to say their piece, making a mockery of justice, with increased threats from our enemies to bomb everyone to pieces, costing us tons of money to prevent. That is the dilemma, I think. There has to be a limit to this new power, and there is no limit. This potus could easily declare marshal law, call all of us potential terrorists because we marched against his policies, and do it within the scope of the law. That is frightening. Romney says we have to trust our president not to do that. I would trust everyone but potus. He has lost all of my trust. I did not like this when Bush did it, and I certainly don’t like it now…

Anyone know who that is that replied to my post?
Mary, thanks for the update on the Jet Stream moving south. We did have some snow Tuesday and then rain washed it all away. It was so wonderful to see snow!
Has not felt like winter without it on the ground.
Teri, hope things get somewhat better for you soon. The court stuff with the village kids is a very difficult stressful situation for all concerned, I’ll keep you in my prayers. You have a big heart.
Taylor, I’ll be in touch by email as soon as I know my firmed schedule.
Welcome home Normita and Bob!.
Hello, Tanya, thanks for the welcome home. We had a wonderful time. Happy New Year.

Not sure where these unidentified comments are coming from. I would not click on any of the ir links.
I guess Perry is stopping his campaign.
My husband thought it was interesting that Obama specifically mentioned that he was saying no to the pipeline based on Hillary’s recommendation. Today in the newspasper only the State Department is mentioned. I guess it wasn’t shovel ready and after years of study, the safety was still unknown.
I’ve been haunted the last two days by a poster that I saw with an unborn child with the words “Pretend I’m a Tree and Save Me”.
Cold and windy here but warm temps are arriving on Monday.
Go, hello!…. I clicked on your article. And no, I was NOT aware that this includes “belligerent” citizens. WHOA!!!! that is indeed a showstoppper. Everyone, read the article that Go has put here.
No, I do not know who posted here without a valid blog logon. Taylor is correct. DO NOT click on that article. I believe the Ron Paul trolls are scanning the web for any occurrence of the name “Ron Paul” on a posting, and he has a bevy of volunteers in their mother’s basement, living on mom and dad’s good will, that respond to any/all of these posts. Notice that the article I posted has what position Ron Paul took in the debate about this subject. And notice that the title of the article they want us to read is about Ron Paul. How they got on and posted without a valid log on is something Normita should notify WordPress about, I believe. What do you say Normita? Welcome back, BTW.
Taylor, I was not aware the potus attributed his decision not to proceed on the pipeline to Hillary. What a crock!!!!! Can you believe this man? All presidents get input from staff and their cabinets on their positions, but the decsion is theirs and theirs alone, except for this one. He is the manchild president. This is a fine example of that. And it had to be Hillary of all people, the one everybody wants to run against him. Nah, nah, nah, nah, hah. I am going to get her for daring to be popular when I should be the one and only… Oh my God, what a mess we have….
Hello all!
Yeah, maybe Normita needs to look into those anonymous posts, creepy.
“belligerent” citizens, that would be me. They would have to kill me.

I am on the fence on how far the government should control the so-called terrorism ‘suspects.’ Other countries also have their policies – some harsher than others. In the U.S. this is a highly political issue, among many others. Imposing one policy may not be the right way.
Welcome home Normita..Pretty background..Happy Birthday I know is coming up for you this next week or so.
Thank you, Tanya, for the early birthday greetings. Glad you like the background – clear, bold and strong.
Good night dear villagers. Looks like our village is coming on back. So happy to see your names. We need CT and Teri and MJ.
Just finished watching the debate. Oh my, wasn’t Newtie is a big huff tonight? I gotta tell ya, I believe his ex-wife. He is a sorry person. And Callista always by his side, looking picture perfect. It just galls me… They were having an affair, with her sleeping in Marianne’s bed for six years before the divorce. Who knows who else might come out of the woodwork, and say me too! And his first wife has a similar story. I don’t know about you, but I think all women ought to come after him with their rolling pins, what do you thinK/
I think his ex-wives have already come after him with rolling pins.
I’m surprised this Newsweek article blasted the president on the Keystone decision.
WASHINGTON — President Obama’s rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico is an act of national insanity. It isn’t often that a president makes a decision that has no redeeming virtues and — beyond the symbolism — won’t even advance the goals of the groups that demanded it. All it tells us is that Obama is so obsessed with his re-election that, through some sort of political calculus, he believes that placating his environmental supporters will improve his chances. …
Finally, even if — as Keystone critics argue — some Canadian oil were refined in the United States and then exported, this would be a good thing. The exports would probably go mostly to Latin America. They would keep well-paid industrial jobs (yes, refining) in the United States and reduce our trade deficit in oil, which exceeded $300 billion in 2011.
By law, Obama’s decision was supposed to reflect “the national interest.” His standard was his political interest. The State Department had spent three years evaluating Keystone and appeared ready to approve the project by year-end 2011. Then the administration, citing opposition to the pipeline’s route in Nebraska, reversed course and postponed a decision to 2013 — after the election.
Now, reacting to a congressional deadline to decide, Obama rejected the proposal. But he also suggested that a new application with a modified Nebraska route — already being negotiated — might be approved, after the election. So the sop tossed to the environmentalists could be temporary. The cynicism is breathtaking.

Good Morning, Villagers…it’s raining…………….YAY!! Light showers this morning, heavier showers by afternoon, highs in the mid 50′s!
Normita…thanks for the change of scenery…we need all the rain we can get to keep our flowers happy.
I received two tickets to a San Jose Sharks game from my brother and his wife as a gift…so my son and I went to the game last night…it was great fun, I’ve been a Sharks fan for years and had never been to a game. Only three and a half minutes in and the Sharks scored…then, nothing for three periods, they lost 4 to 1…you’d think they could have at least been competitive for me, oh, well. It’s interesting how hockey works around TV commercials, there’s so much going on during that time…and we had seats to die for, eight rows off the ice behind the goalie…I had a great time despite the loss and as my son said, “at least we didn’t pay for the tickets”…leave it to him to find even more positive aspects of the loss (LOL)!!
Enjoy your day…
Hey good morning. Gotta tell you about our colloquium about Occupy yesterday. They had a lawyer speak, Lafferty, who did a decent job defending the effort. He spoke for 40 minutes. But he repeatedly blamed “the corporations” for everything, declared LA mayor to be a turncoat when he gave in to pressure from the business men to turn them out of the park they were camping on, and compared the movement to the anti-Vietnam movement of the 60s. He had a side kick with him who repeatedly used the Occupy hand signals, which is this setting seemed almost comical. Then the Q&A started, and it turned out hillarious. The place was flooded with Occupy people in regular dress, who commandered the questions. One woman would not sit down, she had a fight with the speaker. They had to grab the microphone away from her, and almost forcibly sit her down. Another woman said that she knew the Occupiers were going to be rounded up by imported Romanian soldiers and sent to evacuation camps. The speaker handled this question okay, he said he had not heard of any such thing. It was boring at first, then to me it turned into a comedy act.
The Tea Party meeting I attended Tuesday was okay. No fireworks, just a summary of all the 4 laws California government wants to put on the ballot to raise our taxes, and how we are going to fight it. The Tea Party here is vigorously fighting Jerry Brown from adding more taxes to pay for the California deficit. We talked about how to get involved with the elections. I am sure the next meetings will put more focus on that….
Karel, yes, it is raining!!!!!! Rain expected here tonight.
When we were in Hawaii, the occupiers and homeless converged in major parks that were so visibly disorganized and cluttered (to put it mildly). These are not local people, just like to relax in the open fresh air, taking a break from the mainland. The police took them out but then found another venue with their tents and bags. Sad to see while the trolleys and buses with tourists are driving around.
Yea, the painting at the new house and the refinishing of the floors at the new house concluded today, Tomorrow we sort and purge the 30 year collection of junk we had in our walkup attic.
I’ll be glad when this phase is over and our old house is on the market.
Mary, I know of no one who feels strongly for the occupy cause.
We woke to a dusting of snow and slick roads.
I hope some of the rain that devastated Oregon and Washington find its way south.
All eyes on Carolina today. Each state is so different and that is why I think it is good for the race to be competitive in order to give each state a chance to voice its concerns.
Have a good one,
Good Morning, Villagers…plenty of puddle jumpin’ from last nights showers, looking for a scattered shower here and there, otherwise peek-a-boo with the sun, highs about 55 degrees…looks like a wet playoff game in San Francisco tomorrow!
Taylor…glad to hear about the progress you’re making, are these do-it-yourself projects or have you hired out some of this? Sounds like a lot to do…30 years of memories packed away in an attic…that’s hard work!
Occupy protesters were all over S.F. in the rain yesterday and last night…they took over a closed building, the Cathedral Hotel and had to be forcibly removed overnite…many protesters admitted that there was a “frat party” atmosphere to the take over…several people were spray painting and partying. The idea that this is costing taxpayers in CA millions of dollars sickens me…I say Governor Brown is out of luck with his tax hikes…take care of the anarchy in the streets, make some cuts in government and maybe then hard working people will listen…of course, that’s not going to happen!!
Enjoy your day…
E
Good morning. Rainy morning here. Yea!!!
Well, I have not heard you guys say yea or nay on any of the Republican candidates yet, so I will. At this point I am definitely a resounding “NO” on Newt. My two choices are Romney or Santorum. Did you guys listen to the whole interview Newt’s ex-wife gave? Listen to it, I will find the post. My concern is not with the “can we have an open marriage”, it is with what she said later on. She is questioned about her involvement with the FBI regarding her selling influence to the US Congress to an undercover FBI agent playing arms broker in Paris. She said, yes I met with him; Boy howdy, there is a whole other story here that has not come to light. This is what Pelosi says will be the October surprise if Newt runs against potus. It is confidential, held behind Congressional doors, but the FBI was involved here. Seems to me that Newt and her (she was still married to Newt) were selling his influence, the price was $10M to arms brokers. Romney is pushing for him to disclose his ethics papers. But Romney can not say anything because it is still held confidential, but Pelosi knows, and so does potus. It is interesting to me that the ABC interview with the ex-wife was quoted by Ross (the interviewer) as being two hours, but only 20 minutes of it have been released. What is in the other 1.5 hours of interview? When will that come out? Newt is dirty. Bad mistake to vote for him…
What say you guys?
If I lived in SC, would be one of those no knowing who to vote for. Since I don’t live there, I don’t have to decide yet.
I am not “wowed” by any of them. I will say that Romney doesn’t do a thing for me, never has.
Here is the link to the complete interview:
http://www.thedailycandidate.com/video/2012/jan/marianne_gingrich_interview.html
I believe I have heard that Newt was cleared of those allegations, was not fined, but instead had to pay some $300,000.00 not as a fine, but for other
financial issue. I wish I could remember the exact story.
Marianne says herself that she didn’t try to sell her husband’s influence.
I don’t put any trust in ABC on reporting on anything. They are for Obama all the way.
IMHO, all the candidates are “dirty” on some level. Obama being the most tainted.

Newt Gingrich Wins the South Carolina Primary: Live Thread
By David Weigel | Posted Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at 7:12 PM ET
COLUMBIA, S.C.—The result came in at 7:02, five minutes after I arrived at Newt Gingrich’s victory party. “Don’t Stop Believing’” was pulled off the sound system to allow a local TV feed to share the news. This was how crowded it was.
Media, and some supporters, and less than half of the room full. The ultra-desirable problem of the early call.
7:20 p.m.: Exit polls: Get ‘em here. The first things that leap out at me:
- For 60 percent of voters, religious beliefs mattered “a great deal.” Gingrich, a Catholic, won those voters in a rout—46 percent. Romney, a Mormon, won 19 percent. Draw your conclusions.
- Forty-five percent of voters ranked “can defeat Obama” as the supremo quality they want in a nominee. Gingrich won them over Romney, 51-37. Why? Tony Shipley, a Tennessee state representative who runs Newt’s campaign there, explained it to me. “He will LACERATE Obama in a debate. He will absolutely ANNIHILATE him.”
- Sixty-six percent of voters approved of Nikki Haley, the governor who endorsed Romney and campaigned next to him. They voted for Gingrich, 42-29.
- The least shocking result: Two-thirds of voters said that the debates were “a factor” in their votes. They broke 50-22 for Newt.
I am not surprised with the result. The last minute assault from Newt’s ex-wife didn’t make a dent. People are economically desperate to find someone who can be politically trusted and believed to take them out of the financial mess.
Hi!! Mary, on the Republican candidates, I think they are a sorry bunch overall. I have to say that I have detested Gingrich since the Clinton presidency. In the polls against Obama that I saw recently, Romney is the only one that is close to Obama. Santorum should go home.
Thats my two cent today.
It is good to see back online Teri. You take care of yourself.
Hello CT. The other one who should go home is Ron Paul. He reminds me of Ralph Nader – he was so real with his presentation but wiith idealistic expectations. Just won’t cut it.
Good Morning, Villagers…scattered showers swinging through, on and off wet, highs in the mid 50′s…the real heavy rain has waited til after the Big Game!
My two cents worth…I haven’t invested in these candidates, overall, I’m not real thrilled with our choices…however, like Taylor, I’m ABO…or like Glen Beck, he’s voting for the shoe against Obama, if it comes with a nice sock that’s even better…it’s a sorry commentary on our politics, but a reality!
Ron Paul isn’t running for President, he’s said as much, he admitted he can’t even imagine himself in the White House…he’s running to impact the Republican agenda at the Convention…I think he wants a say about monetary policy…he’ll be in the race til the bitter end, most likely!
Santorum…is a one or two issue candidate, I don’t see him going anywhere. So we’re down to Mitt or Newt…Romney is the Republican Establishment candidate in my opinion, they’re going to sell him hard. I also think he’s a moderate progressive, not what he’s currently selling! Newt isn’t even a real conservative, but closer than Romney. Both men have huge baggage…but, one has passion and that’s what’s currently selling…also, he’s quick, knowledgeable and is mirroring what the American people feel and exactly what the race is really about…the struggle between the Saul Alinksky Progressive America/European Socialist model or the Free Enterprise Capitalistic America built on Individualism and exceptionalism ideals.
As I’ve said, I’m not invested yet…CA doesn’t chime in for months and realistically, the choice will be made by then. ABO is my choice and I’m stuck it…does anyone think there’s a chance that someone else will enter the race? That the Republican establishment will realize they’ve made a mistake and hurry someone else into the race? The Vice Presidential choice is going to be huge this time around!
Glad to hear so many opinions…Teri, we’re all still with you, take care!
Go Niner’s….Enjoy your day…
CT- HI!!!!!!!! – so good to hear from you. Is it snowing back East? I saw the forecast for NY, cold and dreary. It rained a bit here yesterday, and tomorrow rain. I go to UCLA tomorrow, but not until the p.m. this time around, so no big traffic worries this time around.
Thank God, looks like we have winter here as normal. Snow in the sierras. We are going to Fresno/Yosemite late next month. My husband has a band convention in which his band will compete. So I get to go along. Taking my friend from Pismo with me. We will spend one whole day in Yosemite. It should be gorgeous with all the snow now. Hopefully, it will not be snowing when we are there.
Teri – Teri – Teri – so glad to hear from you. Hugs, kisses and more hugs to our village kids. Has Sunny June been potted trained yet? That should brighten your day Teri….
Well, Newt won. I am not pleased. I am growing to really dislike the man. But, Karel you are correct, I too am ABO. I just hope we get a strong congress that will keep whoever wins in check. That is the key. You are correct about the VP candidate being important. Newt has said he wants Sarah, big mistake I think. Sarah has not impressed me lately. I like Rubio and I like Colonel West. They are realistic, very impressive in their positions. Stock market is doing okay this month, I am not sure if that is good or bad. We are just taking it one day at a time, one week at a time. Any of you listen to GBTV? We do. I like BS of A. It is getting better and better. They had a spook on Herman Cain last week that was hilariious, and they have a Shariah Law and Order one that is a crackup. I just wonder when CAIR will start railing against that.
Mary, I hope Newt skips Sarah as vp if he gets the full nod. She planted so much baggage that will be such a distraction to the real essence.
It’s been cold and wet here with a bit of snow, sleet and rain. But it was less than an inch so no one is complaining.
Too bad for SF and Baltimore yesterday but close games are good. I’ve been so removed from sports I barely recognize anyone. Is there a Patriot or NY Giant fan in the village?
I think the rigor of the primary season is good. I havent committed to anyone which is fine. I think candidates have a hard path when they see how voters can change their mind. Florida is so different than the previous 4.
I hope that Gabby finds peace and challenge in her retirement. She is an example of true hope for so many.
Hi Taylor, the struggles of Gabby brings to light how unpredictable life is. Who would ever know or predict that in a sun shiny day, a tragedy of that magnitude will strike? I wish her the best in her recovery. We need her back to give some sense on the madness of it all.
Another ABO here, that’s how it is. The voters are going in many directions which is probably good for the candidates including the WH.
I was invited to join the newly-created Media Lab by our local paper. This concept engages readers to go online as an extension of the newspaper. In this infancy stage, it allows the newspaper to keep not lose readership. If there is a media lab in your area, please drop by and get a feel for how effective they are as to quality of the blogs and reporting.
Good Morning, Villagers…foggy factor this morning, then clouds on the cruise, no rain expected, highs in the upper 50′s!
I have no problem with this primary season continuing…we need to see all their flaws up close and personal before they go head to head with Obama. I still think there’s an outside chance that if Gingrich takes Florida, the Republican Establishment will rush someone else on to the scene. Sarah Palin shouldn’t be mentioned as VP…been there, done that…Rubio would be an excellent choice and there are so many others…I think Palin is right where she should be and will be helpful down the stretch. It’s interesting that former congressman, actor, Fred Thompson endorsed Gingrich yesterday.
The S.F. 49′ers didn’t have the offense to win the game…with only 12 out of 26 passes being caught and 1 out of 13 third down conversions…the offense lost the game, not the poor rookie who’s getting death threats and Alex Smith should man-up and take responsibility! The defense is what was superlative and made the Niners competitive…hopefully, they’ll get some additional offensive players to shore up their failings…at least, they made it a wonderful season after so many horrible years!!
I don’t listen to GBTV Mary…but I do catch Glen in clips on the internet…he’s still pushing the envelope and has some valid points.
Crime is up in my neighborhood…the DEA moved in and arrested a bunch of people, garages are being broken into, even prostitutes are a problem…I can’t believe this is Danville. The Association has trimmed back all the bushes, they look oriental now, so people can’t hide in them and there’s a Neighborhood Watch meeting this evening I plan to attend…I always watch my back wherever I am, but I had no idea things were this bad here and I’m very concerned!! This, to me, is a product of a failed CA economy and most of these criminal activities are being kept quiet so as not to influence the real estate market in this area…the realtors in this community didn’t even want a meeting to take place! The cost of a condo, which is for all intents and purposes a glorified apartment, was over 400,000…now, they sell for around 240,000…that has an impact, big time!
Enjoy your day…
Did you see Gabby’s video? She is growing her hair, put on a little more weight. She is beginning to look good again. I hope she colors her hair back to blonde. She looked good that way. I really like her. She will come back, stronger than ever, more mature, more worlly….
Going to the the lake/casino for a couple of nights. it is too cold to camp, so we are staying at the casino. We get promotional rooms, especially this time of year, not during the peak of vacation time. Which is great for us because we like to camp then.
My only comment today is that Newt is whining on Fox this morning that the people were denied their liberties to shout and stomp last night at the debate. Hah!!!! NBC asked them to not respond except during commercials. Romney liked it, said there was nothing wrong with having a debate in a quiet environment.
It is beautiful today after the rain. I am looking forward to the drive thru Santa Barbara.
I watch the cable show Psych which takes place in SB.. I always think of Mary and Tom during the episodes. Beautiful country.
Karel, stay safe. I always think that lights and noise in a dwelling always helps. And be sdure all windows and doors are locked. I went to a neighborhood meeting on identity theft several years ago and it was very helpful. Hope your meeting is a success.
Karel, we missed hearing about those incidents in the neighborhood. Our towns are connected with barely half a street away. I agree that the poor economy is pushing people to the brink and no neighborhood is immuned to crimes. Just hope that the promises this totus made will take hold into reality, which I doubt very much. We need change.
Good Morning, Villagers…gray gives way to sunny skies, highs hovering around 60 degrees…looks like rain is off the menu, til maybe next week!
Well I saw the first 20 minutes of Obama’s last SOTU Address…same ol’, same ol’ as far as I could tell…any other impressions?
Went to the Neighborhood Watch meeting…with 13 buildings, 164 units…I expected a crowd, maybe, maybe, 17 people showed up. The consensus of opinion is that renters are a major part of the problem…there’s only a 43% owner occupied ratio…so there’s a very fluid population and no standards being used as to who can and can’t rent here. The problem is monumental…it’s amazing how little concern has been paid to these problems til now. One resident said she had reported a hate crime…another said a man pushed his way into their condo and if her husband hadn’t been there, she doesn’t know what would have happened…instances of crimes ranging from cars being broken into, to drug dealing, etc. I suggested they might curtail solicitors in the neighborhood…that might stop some from casing the area…we get a lot of strangers selling stuff and I don’t open my door to them, but a lot of others do. I think I was the only renter at the meeting and there was a definite negative attitude displayed by the owners against renters…I guess I can understand that…but as I said, renters want a safe place to live too!! We’ll see where this meeting leads…the Danville Police Dept. has three officers on duty…so if we want to take back our neighborhood, it’s up to the residents and having so many people and so little interest, means the quest is huge!!
Mary…enjoy your adventure, what a joy to just pack up and head out the door.
Normita…I think the CA government is the real crime…they are sinking and they don’t have the bold solutions or the will to do what’s necessary. Raising taxes is their only answer and I hope people are smarter than that…but, who knows.
Enjoy your day…
I tried to watch it, but he is in full campaign mode and sounded like the same old crap he spewed in 2008.
We were driving to my niece’s house and listened to the totus reading his teleprompters. Did somebody in his stuff review the earlier speeches – identical, with many use of “we can.” I hope it will be his last sotu speech. We need real change.
go, what are the folks in AZ saying about the confrontation between Jan Brewer and Obama at the airport?
Taylor,
Here is one article:

Good day, villagers. Another birthday. I am blessed that we are all here together, sharing joys and pains.
Here’s a video of the great Louis Armstrong’s, “What A Wonderful World.”
Enjoy!
Have a Happy Birthday Normita!
Normita, have a great birthday and year with many surprises, rewards, happy moments. I remember my 10th and12th birthdays the most distinctly. How about you?
Did you hear than Jan Brewer has the final laugh. She sold over 100,000 books on Amazon today as a result of the attention Obama gave it.
Love that!
on Obama!
Hi everybody. Had a great trip. Stayed up until 3 a.m. Tuesday night. Too late for my old bones…And I had to sleep last night, could not stay up late. But we had loads of fun. My husband won a jackpot, and he was in seventh heaven.
I tried to listen to potus, but god I just can’t stand it. I cut him off, and then later when I turned on Fox, he was on again. I guess it was a rebroadcast. You know, I listened to Mitch Daniel’s speech and I was really impressed with not just the content, but the style and intellectual maturity of the words. When you listen to potus’s speeches his words and dialect are almost trivial, repetitive, high-school english. Mitch Daniel’s words and style was doctorial in nature. Did you notice the difference? To me it was blaringly obvious. It was like a teacher schooling his student on how it should be done. It reminded me of John Kennedy’s style. Remember how beautiful his words were? I don’t much about Mitch Daniels, but I sure would like to know more.
Happy, happy, happy birthday Normita. We enjoy the village, thank you for your gift to us.
Go, I ready the article you posted, and most importantly some of the comments. Sounds like the AZ Tea Party can kick butt. I guess you all heard by now that potus did not make his appearance at the Georgia court to defend his position that he is a “natural born” citizen. I just wonder how the judge will react. Will he keep his name off the ballot?
MaryPuma,
The Judge in GA said “don’t attend at your own peril” to the potus.
I hope they leave him off.
How exciting for Tom. Tell him congrats.
Mary, you may want to read this which compared Daniels speech to Obama’s. It sounded like something you wrote!!!
Teri, how are you?
Tanya is headed down to DC for a training session. It looks like it will be a great weekend.

Villagers, thank you for your birthday wishes. Started the day with a very special birthday breakfast prepared by Bob, then went to the bookstore to pick up a book, had lunch, went to see the Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock movie, then to dinner. Took exception and ordered dessert to end the day.
Hello My Village Family,
Happy Birthday to you Dear Normita and many many more to come and may you have a blessed year!!

But i wont stay on here because i have a few things to do before i go back to my moms, im having to help with my uncle hes still having it really bad cant walk and use his arm, so when my moms not there ive been having to stay there, because he cant really do anything for himself yet.
But i Love you all,
Teri and The Village Kids
Teri – so good to read your words. You sound better. I can just imagine what it must be like to take care of someone who can’t walk. I pray that your tragic times end soon. And it is good to hear that our Sunny June is now a big girl, not a baby anymore. She gets a gold sticker from me!
My washing machine broke yesterday.
I figured today I would go to the laundromat and do my laundry, but my husband (wow!) promptly got in the car, went to Sears, ordered us a new one, and it gets delivered today. Boy, my hero! It has been not wringing out the clothes properly at random times, not a consistent failure. And I knew that if I called a repairman and could not reproduce the problem, he would probably not believe me. So I waited, and sure enough I had a definite “will not work” failure yesterday. The repairman said it would cost me more to repair it than buy a new one. Can you believe that?
Teri, you need to slow down a bit – catch your breath.
Mary, what a hero!
Being in a laundromat once in a while may not be too bad. Bob and I did our laundry in Hawaii at a laundromat and it was quite expensive, plus you had to sit there. Extra cheer for your husband.
